K’s Kolumn

by Kirsten Steele on March 22, 2017

Spring is rapidly approaching and with that comes the flowers blooming, the birds singing, and the smell of fresh cut grass – new life. Many people have a chance at a new and improved life with the anticipation of the changing seasons brings the thoughts of the gift of life and of an organ, cornea or tissue transplant. Many hope for this chance. April is Donate Life Month, a chance to make people aware of organ, eye and tissue donation and the good that comes from it. As a potential candidate for one of these gifts, I am making a huge impact with my advocacy for transplant patients, healthcare, and other issues that many of us face on a daily bases.

I would like to ask you to “give back” to your community by writing a letter to the editor or your Legislators, or you can do a little research and educate your friends and family. I personally have lost friends waiting for their lifesaving organ and I don’t want to lose any more. The State of Alabama ranks near the top of the list in need for organs and is near the bottom of the list for the number of registered donors. We need your help to make a difference; to raise awareness for National Donate Life Month, see the article in the newsletter.

Change For A Lifetime

Every cent makes a difference

We would like to express our deepest gratitude for your generous contributions towards “Keep Kirsten Kicking”. Your contributions of time, prayer, money, physicality, or any other of your many talents have assisted in relieving the growing burden of expenses involved with the care needed to continue moving toward receiving the multi-organ transplant that is desperately needs. We would like to ask for you to consider making a tax deductible donation to National Foundation for Transplants (NFT), in honor of Kirsten for the care that she desperately needs.

If you are not familiar with Kirsten’s story, then please visit our website to find more information about her trek. Your continued support and contributions are greatly welcomed and drastically warranted. Your gift of $50 will allow us to stay one night at The Transplant House of Cleveland; $25 will help with one day’s meal plan for us to travel; $10 will cover other fees incurred; and even a $.01 will benefit through this journey and help to make a “Change For A Lifetime”. If you do not have the capability of gifting monetarily, then that is ok; any donation/contribution you can assist us with will be greatly appreciated and benefit us in a way you would never imagine.

Your support is needed now, more than ever. Please take a few minutes and go to the NFT donation form where you can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Kirsten. Once there you will see a few different options to help Kirsten. Choose from an one-time gift or a recurring gift, then follow the directions within the rest of the form for your gift information. If you’d prefer to write a check and send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Alabama Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please be sure to write “in honor of Kirsten Steele” on the memo line.

We thank you again for your assistance, support and compassion as we move forward with the transplant process. We look forward to keeping you updated on our journey to a “new normal”.

Sincerely,

Robert & Kirsten Steele

National Donate Life Month

Each year throughout April, National Donate Life Month promotes the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. Across the United States in April, National Donate Life Month features local, regional and national activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors, and to celebrate those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. During Donate Life Month, we encourage everyone to increase awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation, and to encourage people to sign-up for the donor registry.

We are taking orders for an “April Fool’s” / “Organ Donor” T-shirts that we are asking those participating in our Donate Life events wear in order that we can bring awareness to our cause and help people realize that there are thousands of people needing transplants and that one donor can save eight lives.

YOU CAN’T TAKE ‘EM WITH YOU

DRESS DOWN DAYS FOR NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH

April is National Donate Life Month (Organ Donation). We would like to ask you to get involved with our campaign this year. Also, spread the word by asking your company, other offices, friends, families to be involved in our fundraising on behalf of the National Foundation for Transplants Alabama Transplant Fund for National Donate Life Day, April 21, 2017. We are asking for your participation in this event by allowing your employees have the opportunity to “dress down” for life by wearing jeans or appropriate casual attire and the T-shirt we are offering. If your office already has a casual attire policy, you can still participate in our event; we would like to ask that you wear our shirt and let everyone know about our cause. We would also like to ask that with your participation that your company dedicate the day to raising awareness for the National Foundation for Transplants Alabama Transplant Fund. If you need help with this, please let us know and we will be happy to help you with this.

  • Donate $20 to “Dress Down” on Friday, April 21, 2017
    • $15 for the T-shirt
    • $5 for participation

Deadline to order is the Friday, April 7, 2017

We hope that you will be able to assist us with this event; however, if you would rather make a tax-deductible donation to our cause, then you may send your gift to the NFT Alabama Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please be sure to write “in honor of Kirsten Steele” on the memo line.
